Pack Your Schoolbag Correctly: Tips from a Professional

Pack Your Schoolbag Correctly: Tips from a Professional

/ Sebastian Maling

Always have your child pack their schoolbag the evening before, never hectically in the morning on the school day. Under time pressure, we tend to just stuff everything into the bag to finish quickly. Introduce a fixed time for packing, for example in the early evening. Then the relaxed, thoughtful filling of the schoolbag quickly becomes routine.

Use Inner Compartments Correctly

The heaviest books and binders always belong in the rearmost compartment, directly against the back. This keeps the center of gravity close to the body, and the load does not pull your child backward, which would unnecessarily strain the back. The closer the weight is to the back, the less strain on the spine. Light notebooks and folders belong in the middle compartment, and the pencil case goes in the very front. When buying, look for adjustable inner compartments. This way, you can easily enlarge the rear compartment if needed to create more space for heavy books.

Use Outer Compartments Cleverly

Everything that could potentially leak or damage the notebooks, such as water bottles, lunch boxes, and fruit, belongs in the side pockets and the front compartment. Things that need to be quickly accessible, such as a wallet, keys, or student ID, are also optimally stored here. Pack the outer compartments as balanced as possible. Equal weights on the left and right prevent the schoolbag from pulling to one side and unevenly straining your child's back. Ideally, the carrying system of the schoolbag also uses the front for transporting items. For example, if the heavy water bottle is attached to the front of the carrying strap, it partially balances the weight on the back, and the back is less stressed.

Make Daily Packing a Routine

Only what is really needed on that particular day belongs in the schoolbag. So that unnecessary things do not accumulate over time, your child should empty the bag every day first. This trains their sense of what is essential and what can stay at home. Especially at the beginning, it's worth it for you to help with daily packing and give tips. Perhaps even create a checklist with your child. Over time, your child will develop a feel for how to optimally fill their school companion. Nevertheless, occasionally check the contents of the schoolbag surprisingly to correct any errors that may have crept in.
